NFL week 12

Last weekend restored balance to the NFL. Yes, I finished over .500 with 9-6 and that brings the total to 65-46.
Thursday games
Patriots @ Lions

NFL should get rid of tradition and slot “game of the week” here instead of forcing the Lions to play on thanksgiving. And they’ll get embarrassed by halftime. Patriots all the way, by 10.

Saints @ Cowboys
Naturally I would pick the superior team here, but I think the Cowboys have finally exorcised their demons. Thus they’ll beat the Saints for the second year in a row. Cowboys by 4

Bengals @ Jets
Bengals have officially given up, after going belly-up last week vs the Bills. Rex Ryan won’t let the Jets fumble this easy win away. Jets by 12 Continue reading NFL week 12

NFL week 11 picks

Now this season is finally turning interesting, after the schizoid, unpredictable roller-coaster of the 1st half. But my picks are taking a turn for the worse: 5-9 last week. 56-40 on the year. Tsk.

Game of the week
Giants@ Eagles
Both teams are tied for 1st place. Eagles completely destroyed the Redskins last night, and Vick is now the clear frontrunner for the MVP. Someone is controlling him in Madden football in real life! Eagles’ secondary is opportunistic, and they can snooker Eli Manning into errant throws. If they do, the game wont’ be close. The Giants are still stumbling about in a daze after last week’s buttkicking from the Cowboys. However, prior to that, they were a much more solid team and their pass rush is entirely capable of slowing down Vick. Their offense is explosive with RB Bradshaw and WR Nicks. If Manning doesn’t throw picks, Giants can keep this close. I shouldn’t pick against the Eagles, since they’re undefeated with Vick, but nothing is guaranteed this year. Giants by 1.

Colts @ Pats
The annual “Game of the year.” Pats are on a roll, despite a hiccup vs the Browns, and their D shut down the Steelers last week. Colts have historically had problems at Foxboro, and Brady is entirely capable of shredding the Colts’ D to confetti. expect Unsung RB Green-Ellis to feast on the Colts’ soft run D via playaction plays. Colts, OTOH, are still potent on offense, despite all their injuries. It’s due to the immortal Manning and his trusty sidekick, WR Wayne. Pats’ D isn’t anything to write home about so far, and Colts will not hold back. Normally i’d go with the Pats in this situation, but this time, i feel Manning is on a mission this year. Colts 34, Pats 31 Continue reading NFL week 11 picks

NFL week 10 picks

At least 4 games are worth watching this week. I was 6-6 last week, which brings my total to a grand 51 to 31. After suffering through an upset-filled weekend, I’m ready to restore order and see the contenders separate themselves from the chaff.
Game of the games of the week
Patriots @ Steelers

They’re the two top teams in the NFL, and the result will determine the rest of the season. Patriots are consistent with Brady and their #2 scoring offense. Pittsburg is stingy on pass defense so it’ll be exciting. Steelers are actually #1 in offense and #1 in rushing yards allowed. Steelers by 6  Continue reading NFL week 10 picks

NFL week 9 picks

I went 7-5 last week, which brings me to a grand total of 45 – 25. That takes me down to a measly 64%. Ay caramba!
Game of the week
Colts @ Eagles

Colts need to separate from the others in their division. Eagles needs this game for credibility and catch the Giants. Despite being riddled with injuries allover the roster, the Colts keep on chugging, thanks to Manning. The Eagles don’t have enough on D to stop this well-oiled machine, and Manning will pick them apart without breaking a sweat. On the other hand, the Eagles’ offense is nearly as explosive as the Colts, and with Vick coming back, he can supply the running dimension to take advantage of the Colts’ D weakness. Manning pulls another one out of the fire in a shootout. Colts by 7 Continue reading NFL week 9 picks

Deafness & writing

Every community has its myths, but one in particular struck me. In the deaf community, your writing competence is supposedly related to how English you sign or mouth your signs. If you sign in pure ASL, then your writing competence in English or any other textual language may not be up to snuff. Now, if you mouth your signs, enunciate your words a little too clearly, you seem to be introducing an unnecessary element to your signing, as if you’re embarrassed of signing without appealing to another language. NFL week 8 picks

It’s that time of the week, and it’s high-time for some NFL picks courtesy of everybody’s favorite Heretic!  Last week I was 8-4, a step up from the embarrassment of the previous week. 38-20 isn’t too bad, though, but I expect at least 70%.

Game of the Week
Steelers @ Saints

The Steelers are now at full strength, with Roethlisberger back. The Saints, however, aren’t, with their running backs injured. Given last week’s horrible meltdown, Drew Brees should be extra motivated to bounce back, but the Steelers are the most complete team in the league right now. Steelers by 3 Continue reading NFL week 8 picks

New blog you should be reading

My colleague Paul Newall has launched a brand new blog called “The Kindly Ones.” I’ve been friends with this fella on the internet ever since we met at the old Internet Infidels at the Secularweb.org. We’ve had many classic wars with quite a number of Internet Personalities on a number of forums, and these days, we’ve migrated to blogging.
His specialty is philosophy of science and historiography and rugby, and shortly I’ll be blogging on his latest topic, Philosophy as remedy.

NFL week 7 picks

Finished 6-5 last week. Weak. Now I’m 30-16 on the year. Better step it up this week!
Must see:
Eagles @ Titans
Both teams are coming off excellent victories last week, and this should be a great match-up between two teams with two solid options at QB each. Titans MUST stop the eagles’ passing game in order to win. Lucky for them, playmaker DeSean Jackson is out with a bruised noggin. Since Kolb is playing, Titans won’t have to sacrifice a DB to spy the QB for scrambling out of the pocket. Chris Johnson is finally getting back on track and the Eagles may not be able to stop him. Titans in a shootout.

Vikings @ Packers
The Favre Bowl, part III is headlined by a pair of underachieving teams. The Vikings haven’t found their 2009 magic, and the Packers keep getting injured and penalzing themselves. Sack artist LB Matthews is back, but Moss has a couple of weeks under his belt catching passes from Favre. Add the Packers’ 21st defense against the pass, and that spells a Viking victory.

Bob’s and Nick’s special
Skins @ Bears
Both are coming off tough losses last week. The Bears need to stop the newfound Skins running game in Tourain, but their defense is really struggling, especially vs the pass, and they can’t protect Cutler. Skins need to feed Tourain and get after Culter. Skins by 7

NFL week 6 picks

I’ll be blogging my NFL picks from now on. I already posted my picks for week 3 (here), week 4 (here) & 5 (here). I’m currently 24-11
Games of the week
Ravens @ Patriots

Moss is gone, so who’s gonna catch those 50 yard bombs from Brady? All they have are untested, unproven talent, and it’s not a good time to start experimenting against the ferocious Ravens defense. In fact, the Ravens have been poor on run defense, but the Patriots don’t have anyone in their backfield worth mentioning. Ray Rice is healthy, and Flacco is maturing by the week. Ravens by 3. The best of East & West

Last Friday at Deaf West Theater, I had the pleasure to watch two excellent performers in Jon Savage & Douglas Ridloff, and I also had the good fortune to work with them for their next performances on Saturday and Sunday. They hail from opposite sides of the US: San Diego for Savage, and New York City for Ridloff, and their material quite aptly represented their stomping grounds. Savage waxed on hilarious & poignant tales from his childhood, whereas Ridloff channeled Lenny Bruce in which he was spontaneous, frank, and improvisational. Continue reading The best of East & West
