Because I&#8217;m a johnny-come-lately to anime, the actual best shows I watched in 2011 are <em>Revolutionary Girl Utena<\/em>, <em>Bakemonogatari<\/em>, and <em>Bokurano<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-621\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/kyubey.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-621\" title=\"kyubey\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/kyubey-1024x576.jpg\" width=\"520\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/kyubey-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/kyubey-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/kyubey.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cute, isn&#8217;t it?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>1. <em>Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Easily the most hyped of 2011, and yet the near-perfect blend of stylish animation and epic storyline excused the mass hysteria. Besides, it also has the most impressive villain I&#8217;ve seen since Hannibal Lecter. Basically, Madoka is a\u00a0fantastic deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre. Once a genre is deconstructed, it is actually revived, because tropes that have degenerated into clich\u00e9s are now discarded. However, it did wrap up everything in a<em> deus ex machina\u00a0<\/em>styled bow. The upside to that is no possible sequel is in the offing!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_622\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-622\" style=\"width: 520px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Mawaru-Penguindrum-07-Large-31.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-622\" title=\"Princess of the Crystal\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Mawaru-Penguindrum-07-Large-31-1024x576.jpg\" width=\"520\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Mawaru-Penguindrum-07-Large-31-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Mawaru-Penguindrum-07-Large-31-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Mawaru-Penguindrum-07-Large-31.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Princess of the Crystal beckons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2. <em>Mawaru PenguinDrum<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The creator of <em>Utena<\/em>, Ikuhara makes a grand return to anime with a possibly even better work in <em>PenguinDrum<\/em>. Despite riddled with symbolism &amp; several philosophical allusions, this show keeps the plot moving briskly, and reveals its mystery painstakingly slowly. Its impact will be felt for years to come, long after the characters and the furor are forgotten. Which just might be its very own\u00a0<em>Seizon Senryaku!<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_623\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-623\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/steinsgateweb.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-623 \" title=\"steins gate\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/steinsgateweb.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/steinsgateweb.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/steinsgateweb-264x300.jpg 264w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Future Gadget Establishment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>3. <em>Steins;Gate<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With the antics of the best lead character of the year, Okabe,<em> Steins;Gate<\/em> starts off as a slow-boiling mystery, and halfway through, it successfully lurches into a thriller. Easily the most ridiculously high camp and yet revels in the absurdity of anime\/manga tropes, which in turn combines into an understandable guilty pleasure. Where critics are divided on whether <em>Mirai Nikki<\/em> is pure pulp or pure illogical fantasy, I revel in its consistent inconsistency, as well as the greatest Yandere of all anime-dom: Yuno Gasai.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_625\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-625\" style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/usagi_drop.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-625 \" title=\"usagi_drop\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/usagi_drop.jpg\" width=\"383\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/usagi_drop.jpg 383w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/usagi_drop-252x300.jpg 252w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Giddiyup, Daikichi!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>5. <em>Usagi Drop<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite myself, I enjoy a great slice of life, and this is the best of the lot (<em>Tora Dora, Dennou Coil, Nodame Cantabile<\/em>, &amp; <em>Genshiken<\/em>). Its unique watercolor designs will long outlive the most stylish of 2011. Precocious kid Rin moves in with her 30-year-old nephew Daikichi and teaches him how to become a parent. I felt this series ended prematurely, without a satisfying resolution, but perhaps that lack of denouement is precisely what life is like.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_626\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-626\" style=\"width: 627px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Prince-Baka.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-626 \" title=\"Prince Baka\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Prince-Baka.png\" width=\"627\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Prince-Baka.png 697w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Prince-Baka-300x164.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prince Baka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>6. <em>Level E<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Quite the funniest show of the year, where an alien Prince lands on Earth and hides from his royal duties. His betrothed and bodyguards in tow, guarantee hilarity &amp; hijinks. No other character successfully trolled the audience consistently.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_627\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-627\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fate-zero-Cast.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-627\" title=\"Fate-zero\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fate-zero-Cast.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fate-zero-Cast.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Fate-zero-Cast-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King Arturia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7. <em>Fate\/Zero<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An epic series revolving around a magical artifact that harvests legendary heroes to duke it out for its wish-granting powers. This show slowly grew on me, from an excessively chatty opener to a well-animated, well-thought out result. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/?p=607\">philosophical dialogue I blogged on earlier<\/a>\u00a0clinched\u00a0<em>Fate\/Zero<\/em> a spot on this list alone. The second half is due in April, so this low ranking may change.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-628\" style=\"width: 497px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/un-go.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-628\" title=\"un-go\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/un-go.jpg\" width=\"497\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/un-go.jpg 497w, https:\/\/www.hyperboreans.com\/heterodoxia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/un-go-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">character design by Yun Kouga<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>8. <em>Un-Go<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A quirky, multiple-layered detective show that covers many themes: original characters, uncanny valley, rights of artificial life, discourse on truths vs Truth, and the collective culture of Japanese propaganda set against future utopian ideals.
